By Anne Marie Amacher, The Catholic Messenger DAVENPORT – Two men are preparing to enter the priesthood for the Diocese of Davenport next weekend. Deacon Hai Duc Dinh and Deacon Joseph Sia will be ordained at 10 a.m. May 10 at Sacred Heart Cathedral by Bishop Martin Amos. Deacon Dinh, 45, was born in Saigon, Vietnam. He attended schools in Vietnam and graduated from the University of Technical Pedagogy in Saigon where he studied technical drawing. After several attempts to escape Vietnam, he made it to the United States and joined up with his family in Davenport. Before entering seminary studies, Deacon Dinh worked as a cook, then a meat cutter. He studied philosophy at St. Ambrose University in Davenport before completing his theology studies at the University of St. Mary of the Lake — Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Ill. Deacon Dinh completed his internship at Our Lady of Victory parish in Davenport in 2006 and did his clinical pastoral education at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport in 2007. On Aug. 18, 2007, he was ordained a transitional deacon by Bishop Amos at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Davenport. He will celebrate his first Mass at 9 a.m. May 11 at Our Lady of Victory in Davenport. Another Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. May 11 at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Deacon Sia, 33, was born in Manila, Philippines. He attended schools there and graduated with a medical sciences degree from the University of the Philippines and a doctor of medicine from the same university. After graduating, he was a university research associate at the Institute of Human Genetics at the University of the Philippines from 2000-2002. He was then a graduate research assistant at the University of Iowa from 2002-03. He completed his theology studies at University of St. Mary of the Lake — Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Ill. Deacon Sia completed his internship at St. Paul the Apostle parish in Davenport in 2006 and his clinical pastoral education at Interfaith House in Chicago in 2007. On Aug. 18, 2007, he was ordained a transitional deacon by Bishop Amos at St. Paul the Apostle. He will celebrate his first Mass at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, May 11, at St. Paul the Apostle Church. Deacons Dinh and Sia will receive their ministry assignments after their ordination. |
