Youth Ministry Leaders from across the Diocese meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. The site of the meeting has changed to the parish offices of St. Thomas More in Iowa City. To get to the parish from Dubuque St. (south on exit 244 if coming from I-80), go west on E. Park Road, then left on Riverside, right on Grove St. (the church is at Riverside and Grove). Park in the lot south of church; we meet downstairs in the church building.


Certificate Program in Youth Ministry Studies

This nationally recognized training program for youth ministry leaders will again be offered this summer at St. Ambrose University. These four courses will be offered this summer:

The four remaining courses in the program will be offered in 2009.

The Institute in Adolescent Catechesis, is a program of the Center of Ministry Development, will be held August 11-15 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, IL. The institute will prepare parish faith formation and youth ministry leaders to plan and implement dynamic catechesis for youth. For more information, go to www.cmdnet.org.


The National Conference on Catholic Youth Ministry will be held Dec. 4-7 in Cleveland, Ohio. This biennial conference for adults who serve in youth ministry is a great opportunity to learn and to network with other youth leaders. Information, including an online promotional video, and registration is now available at www.nfcym.org. Registration is $245 if done by Oct. 17. A $20 discount is offered to members of the National Association for Catholic Youth Ministry Leaders. NCCYM registrants can join NACYML and receive this discount during the NCCYM online registration process.

The 2009 Junior High Youth rally will be held March 29 at the Iowa Memorial Union.

Christian Leadership Institute (CLI)

The Christian Leadership Institute or CLI is a week-long training event designed to teach young people the skills necessary for effective leadership with other youth and adults in a parish or school youth ministry setting. CLI offers an offers and opportunity for leadership development through the intense period of learning and community living. The program is an in-depth experience of skills development in the areas of organization, communication, and motivation, as well as personal growth which enables young person to discover his or her own leadership style.

 

CLI will be again be offered twice this summer. The dates are July 6-11 at Twin Lakes Christian Center near Manson, and July 20-25 at Christian Conference Center near Newton. CLI is a weeklong training event designed to teach young people the skills necessary for effective leadership with other youth and adults in the parish or school youth ministry setting.

Who should attend?

Young people age 15-18, who are preparing to enter at least their sophomore year of high school. Each candidate should be either currently involved with or beginning a leadership role in a parish, school, or diocese.

 

Adult Youth Ministers, parish pastoral and school personnel. CLI is a highly valuable learning experience for the adult. Adults are expected to be present for the entire week and participate fully in the CLI process.

 

What else should I know?

There are 72 participants per session

Registration is a first come, first-served basis

Registration will NOT be taken over the phone

 

What are the components of CLI?

Skill Workshops:

Each day includes a large group workshop on one of these leadership skills:

  • Leadership Styles

  • Communication

  • Planning

  • Group Dynamics

  • Consensus Seeking

Support Groups:

Throughout the week, CLI provides and opportunity for participants to practice these new skills working in small groups. The small group is also a place to share insights on special topics such as:

  • Prayer

  • Decision Making

  • Call to Ministry

  • Youth Ministry

  • Affirmation

Prayer, Workshop and Social Time:

Each day there is time for recreation and relaxation, prayer and the Eucharist, and getting to know other youth throughout the state of Iowa.

Diocesan Youth Ministry Committee (DYMC)

 

Applications for 2008-2009 are now available on in the Faith Formation Library or on the DYMC page.

 

The DYMC is a group of 18 youth who work with adult leaders to provide leadership and promote comprehensive youth ministry across our diocese. Three youth representatives are elected from each deanery. These youth must be sophomores, juniors or seniors, and should have attended the Christian Leadership Institute. COR (Christ in Others):

Christ in Others retreats are for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. COR is a weekend full of personal reflection about family and relationships with other people in our lives. A faith-filled experience of fun and friendship.

Quest Retreat:

QUEST is an overnight retreat for freshman & sophomores that helps you to focus on loving yourself, loving others and loving God. It's a chance to get away from your regular routine, meet new people, talk about important issues, and have fun!

National Evangelization Team (NET):

NET will present retreats in our diocese in the 2008-2009 school year. NET does retreats for high school and junior high youth, including Confirmation retreats.

 

NET Ministries will send a team to our diocese next January 13 - February 2, 2009. The team will be available to parishes and schools. Weekday and weeknight slots are still available. Help Youth Ministry with Your Online Searches: Use Goodsearch, a Yahoo search engine, to search online and the diocese gets a penny for each search. Start by going to www.goodsearch.com. You'll see two fiends. In the second, type in Diocese of Davenport and hit the verify button. Then start searching!
