Aid to Immigrant Families in Postville
The recent immigration raids in Postville have left families in dire need of assistance. There are basic needs for cots, blankets, food, juice, etc. for the families who have lost income due to the raids. The best response is to send money so that supplies can be purchased locally in Postville.
Please join the Diocese of Davenport in providing financial assistance to the families in need. Your check to the Diocese of Davenport will be combined with other donations and forwarded to the Archdiocese of Dubuque for providing assistance to these families in need.
Make checks to: The Diocese of Davenport with a notion of "Postville Assistance" and send to: Char Maaske The Diocese of Davenport 2706 N Gaines St. Davenport, IA 52804-1998
If you are bilingual and live or can relocate to the Postville area for a time, there is a need for assistance to the people taking shelter in the St. Bridget parish area, and there will be assistance needed from translators to deal with business, schools, and financial institutions as families try to restructure their lives.
Call: Terri Reynolds, Catholic Charities, Dubuque Immigration Office 563-556-5372 or Paul Rael in Postville at 563-864-3138.
In the Waterloo and Des Moines areas there may be a need for assistance to those who are working the issues, such as temporary volunteer assistance with Des Moines Diocese Catholic Charities. Call : 515-237-5068 to assist in the Des Moines area.
Archbishop Hanus of the Archdiocese of Dubuque issued a compelling statement about the Church’s position on both the raid and the flaws in the present US immigration policy. Also, the USCCB has set up a website that explores in depth not only the issues involving immigration, but also the myths that are so often repeated about immigration and immigrants.
