Building Projects / Art and Architecture

The Diocesan Building Commission serves to advise the Bishop and assist parishes and other communities with their repair, renovation, and building projects. Consultation with the Building Commission is required for any renovation or building project; if the liturgical space is involved, the Diocesan Liturgical Commission must also be consulted. Please refer to the following policies for details.

The Building Commission meets on the last Thursday of every month. The Liturgical Commission meets every other month.

Communities should contact the chair of each commission to arrange for a time to present their projects.

The chair of the Building Commission is Fr. Jim Vrba (563-732-2271) and the chair of the Liturgical Commission is Dcn. Frank Agnoli (563-324-1912 x255).

Policies Relating to Building and Renovation Projects

All building and renovation projects in parishes must be in accord with the policies included in this document, which describes when and how the Diocesan Building and Liturgical Commissions are to be consulted.

Policies Relating to Art and Architecture

This policy addresses specific questions regarding church art and architecture and makes the options available in Built of Living Stones particular for our diocese. Updated 2/14/08 to include a section on the disposition of sacred items no longer needed or suitable for liturgical use.

Implementation of Summorum Pontificum

On July 7, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI published his Apostolic Letter, Summorum pontificum, which relaxed restrictions on the use of the Tridentine (1962) Mass. In order to assist in the reception of the Holy Father's letter, and in order to foster the reconciliation and unity that prompted its writing, the following interim policy is in effect for our diocese:

Baptisms not recognized by the Roman Catholic Church

In order to be recognized as valid, baptisms in other Christian communities must be done with water (according to the practice of that community: sprinkled, poured, immersion, submersion) and in the name of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) as understood by the Catholic Church. As a guide to assist in decision-making, this document lists communities whose baptism is not recognized by the Catholic Church. The document may not be exhaustive, so questions about individual cases should be referred to the Office of Liturgy (RCIA) or the Tribunal (permissions or dispensations for marriage and related matters).
