Sunday, September 11, is the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time; the Mass and readings for that day are used.
September 16, 2001 – the Sunday after 9/11 – was also the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time during Year C; we will be hearing the same readings that we would have heard in the aftermath of that disaster 21 years ago. The parables of the lost sheep and lost coin, and the prodigal son, all speak of renewed/healed relationships—of the importance of mercy (that theme also echoed in the other readings).
During the week following September 11, parishes may wish to celebrate a special Mass for “first responders” – such as police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians/paramedics – using the Mass for Those in Public Office (#22) or the Mass for the Preservation of Peace and Justice (#30). Appropriate intercessions could also be included at the Sunday Masses on the weekend of September 10-11.
